Saab Ericsson Space separates three satellites from a single Ariane-5
Saab Ericsson Space set a new record by yesterday's launch of the
telecom satellites INSAT-3E, e-BIRD and the Swedish-built scientific
satellite SMART-1, all on board the same Ariane-5 launcher.
"This is an all-time high for us to handle three large satellites in a
single launch. In one go, we increased our launch record from 316 to 320
successful in-orbit separations using our systems", says a very pleased
Jörgen Remmelg, head of Saab Ericsson Space mechanical systems division.
The Ariane launcher is well-known for its multiple launch capability. On
this launch, the first satellite to be delivered in orbit was the INSAT-
3E, followed by e_BIRD. The scientific satellite SMART-1 was the last
payload to leave the launcher after separation of a protective shroud.
The stack of satellites used in total four separation systems and two
adapter rings from Saab Ericsson Space.
Saab Ericsson Space has also played a major role in the construction of
the ESA moon probe SMART-1 under contract with the Swedish Space
Corporation. Saab Ericsson Space has been in charge of integration and
test of the satellite and has been in charge of thermal design and
electromagnetic compatibility. Saab Ericsson Space manufactured harness,
antennas, power supplies and vital parts of the Command and Data
Handling System Unit.
