The global interest for Saab’s Air Traffic Management (ATM) offers has
increased rapidly and particularly with the Saab Remote Tower system. To meet the new demands, Saab has recruited Mark Robinson as Business Development Manager – Air in Australia.
Saab has been operating in Australia since 1990 - mainly working in the Naval domain. In 2008, Saab expanded to also include a civil security business and several important contracts have been signed including a security management system contract for the South Queensland Correctional Precinct in Gatton.
“The next step is to expand the Air Traffic Management side of the business where we see great potential,” says Dean Rosenfield, General Manager Saab Security (Australia). “Mark Robinson has the necessary experience from both the civilian and military side that we needed in our team.”
Mark Robinson has a background in the Royal Australian Air Force, including operational deployments to the Middle East and as the Executive Officer of 44 Wing. In 2008, Mark joined Airservices Australia initially as an Air Traffic Control specialist supporting the implementation of ATM operational projects. One year later he assumed the role of Program Director for the Implementation of Required Navigation Performance Procedures across Australia.
Mark will be responsible for customer liasion for the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in March between Saab, LFV (Sweden’s Civil Aviation Administration) and Airservices Australia (Australia’s Air Navigation Service Provider) for the delivery
and support of a remotely operated tower solution for trials in Australia.
At the time of the announcement, Airservices CEO Greg Russell said the trial reflected the agency’s ongoing commitment to the development and implementation of new technology to make aviation safer, more environmentally friendly and more efficient.
Mark will operate from Brisbane while the main office for Saab Security is in Adelaide.
The Remote Tower system has been developed by Saab with the LFV Group (Sweden’s Civil Aviation Administration) as operational partner. It was first launched in spring 2009 following thorough live testings. It allows for the air traffic at several small and medium sized airports to be managed and controlled from a single air traffic control centre thus reducing costs and at the same time increasing efficiency and safety.
Airservices Australia will trial the Remote Tower system in Australia. After the trials, Airservices Australia will decide if they will introduce the solution for a number of minor airports including in the remote north-west of Australia. The system also has great potential for military aviation applications – particularly in remote areas.
The Remote Tower facility gives an air traffic controller a 360º panaramic view of the airport (which might be thousands of kilometers away) allowing him to fully control aircraft using that airport. It is an enormous saving for airports that have limited traffic e.g. at remote mining operations.
