  • Where things are created

     |  Story
    Henrik Jern

In my rotation, I found myself at the production operations at our Dynamics business area -  home to an array of weapons systems. I found more than perfect calibrated machines and tools getting products ready to be delivered; the success is built on communication, craft and people who enjoy working with each other.

  • The True Heroes of the Air show

     |  Story

Have you ever thought of the amount of work that goes into the planning, coordination, and execution of bringing three Gripen Fighter aircraft from Sweden to India, fly with them multiple times every day for a week, and then fly them all the way back to Sweden? I sure never had until my manager Richard asked me if I would be interested in doing one of my rotations with Saab’s Flight Test division; they are responsible for testing and validating Gripen aircraft, but also in charge of the planning and coordination of bringing aircrafts to different air shows. The latter was to be part of my rotation, to dress up as a technician and learn everything there is to know about running an air show from the flight operational view – at Aero India.

  • Saab’s major media exposure in Korea

     |  Story

Recently, the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) aired a documentary regarding
anti-corruption in the defense industry in Korea. This 60 minutes-long
documentary, Si-sa-gi-hwek-Chang (which translates to “Window on current
affairs”), proposed Sweden as a role model for bench-marking measures to ensure
zero corruption in the Korean defense industry.

I was standing in my hotel room in Syracuse US, where I had stayed for the last two months, swearing and trying to get all my stuff into my suitcase which must have shrunk, when it suddenly hit me: I am actually going home.

  • Finding Your Motivation

     |  Story

It was a cold, gray and windy day as I looked out onto the vast concrete runways of the Arlanda airport at more than 20 stories above the ground from within the Arlanda Air Traffic Control Tower. In the distance, a fleet of snow plows worked in perfect harmony to remove the snow which peppered the runways and clear a path for the planes. This was a surreal experience that, even one year ago, I would not have ever imagined myself in. However, it is experiences like this that are so important in reinforcing that what we do at work really matters, and motivates us to wake up in the morning and do our best every day.

  • South Africa, what a beautiful country

     |  Story

Happy people, stunning views, helpful colleagues, interesting projects and great food, South Africa knows how to deliver an extraordinary experience from several perspectives. My two months rotation to our office in Centurion, South Africa is coming to an ending, at least for this time. The feelings are mixed and I will for sure miss the country and all the lovely colleagues.

  • A part of Saab you might not know about

     |  Story

Malmslätt, Östersund, Kenya, Nairobi, Somalia, and Mogadishu – these are places that you would not normally think have much in common with each other, yet they are all connected to Saab. How, you may think?

  • Imagine a production site where oil and dirt is all over the place, with no need for technical expertise and filled with un-empowered employees. The Gripen Production site we visited embodied the complete opposite! When we found out we were going to spend four weeks in Gripen production, we had no idea how amazed we would be after four incredibly fun weeks.

  • I didn’t know quite what to expect

     |  Story

When I prepared to go work that very first day
of my rotation at our Market Area (MA) office for North America, situated in Washington D.C. I didn’t know quite what to expect.

When I prepared to go work that very first day of my rotation at our Market Area (MA) office for North America, situated in Washington D.C. I didn’t know quite what to expect. After the graduate year I am to join Gripen Support’s project office as a project manager. But now I’m about to head out the door to go to my first day of my rotation at our marketing office in the United States. An office that has nothing to do with support projects in a country that does not use the (Saab fighter jet) Gripen. But boy was I in for a treat!

  • From machining to delivery in only four weeks

     |  Story

This would be a dream scenario, had I been referring to the actual Gripen production lead time. However, the catchy title refers to the walkthrough Emelie and I were given of all the various stages that are necessary in creating the extraordinary Gripen! How much work could it be producing a Gripen fighter, I mean really? As it turns out – quite a lot!

  • Military exercise in Cultana, Australia

     |  Story

I drove up an early morning to Woodside Military barracks outside the city of Adelaide in Australia. I had packed all the layers of clothing I thought was appropriate for what Australians call “winter” (which doesn’t at all get as cold as the Swedish winter).  I had no idea what I would learn from the coming experience or what I should expect, but I felt ready.

  • Getting trõpiçalízed in Brazil

     |  Story

Imagine the Commander of the Brazilian Army standing in a room in front of a group of approximately 100 military personnel dressed in camouflage uniforms. Imagine that everyone stands up, presses their feet together and the palms of their hands to their thighs, and starts singing the Brazilian National Anthem with full capacity. Then imagine two Swedish graduates standing in the middle of the ceremony trying, as best as their Portuguese skills allow them, to sing and blend in. This experience is one out of many that Johannes and I, Ebba, have had during our assignment in Brazil. The event described was the opening ceremony of a trade-show taking place at the Brazilian Army’s Headquarters in Brasília, the capital of Brazil.

  • Bringing a Touch of South Africa to Sweden

     |  Story

As a proud South African, I was excited to bring a bit of South Africa to Sweden when I got an opportunity to do a rotation abroad in Sweden.  My first rotation outside of my home unit was at Investor Relations at Saab’s office in Stockholm, Alvik. It was a great opportunity to learn something completely out of my comfort zone, coming from a background of political science, economics is something that stresses me out- but I found myself being more stressed out over being lost in cultural translation than anything else.

  • Why Saab is the Best Workplace

     |  Story

If you are interested in innovations, technological change and the way research makes it possible to push technological boundaries, Saab is the place to work. All Saab employees contribute to this every day in one way or another and I must admit that I get very excited and astonished every time I visit a new department and learn about what they are doing. To give you a hint, it is really cool to see the construction of a new generation of Gripens or our world-leading Radar Systems in action. Knowing that I contribute to real projects like these is thrilling - I am sure you understand what I mean.

  • Adventures in South Korea

     |  Story

At the beginning of the Saab Graduate Leadership Programme (SGLP) I got the opportunity to travel to South Korea and our local office in Seoul. It was my first business trip abroad and I felt very excited. As I work with Project Management of Contract Logistic Support (CLS) for Surface Radars at EDS in Gothenburg, it was going to be very interesting to see the Radar systems at our customer’s locations and to meet our Local Support Team. The Radar systems are deployed along the border to North Korea and due to the proximity to Seoul they are a great safety to the 10,5 million inhabitants of the capital. I realised that the work that is done with the CLS to make sure the Radar systems work, actually save lives.

  • Last week we were all meeting up in Sweden for our fifth team week together. It all started off in Stockholm for a day fully booked with interesting meetings and discussions. First of all we got the opportunity to sit down with our CEO Håkan Buskhe for an hour to discuss business within Saab and exciting challenges the future may offer. We also got the chance to ask Håkan questions about his personal view on leadership, what he believes is important to accomplish in order to achieve results and he shared his tips on how we can work with long term versus short term goals.

I can't believe how fast six weeks can pass by. It has been a journey of beautiful nature and wildlife, warm and welcoming colleges, interesting tasking and great food! My name is Linda and I'm a graduate trainee at Saab who just spent six weeks at Saab Grintek Defence in South Africa.
