At Saab Seaeye we offer a school leaver apprenticeship programme which includes gaining a recognised Electrical Engineering qualification. New student start yearly and is advertised through local providers.
The apprentices join the company from day one, and are recruited through submissions from a training provider, who give support through the next two and a half years of their time as apprentices at Seaeye In the first six months they attend a full time course with this company, gaining basic skills in electrical working practices. After this time, they begin training at Seaeye for two years, with one day per week being spent at college working towards an Electrical/Electronics BTEC ONC.
The first year at Seaeye is spent working in the field of building, learning the skills needed to understand reading electrical drawings and diagrams, use of tools and technical language needed to communicate within the environment.
The second year focuses on the testing of completed electrical and electronic assemblies, as well as P.C.B's.
Throughout these two years, the apprentice will follow a timetable which takes them through all departments in production to learn the skills required in a wide variety of roles, with their abilities being assessed by a mentor in each area.
Apprentices are greatly encouraged on completion of the ONC, to continue on to an HND level qualification.
The apprenticeship program has been running for four years in this format.
We currently have five students on the 2.5 year ONC program, and one who is now working towards an HND.
Former apprentices from SSL have gone on to work as systems commissioning technicians, and currently represent two of the management team.
At Saab Seaeye we offer an Industrial Placement programme which is a one year placement during University with a special project given. This is advertised yearly.
