What you will be a part of

Saab Traffic Management (TM) serves air traffic and marine customers around the globe with advanced solutions that enable the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. There are two operating units within TM: Air Traffic Management (ATM) provides airport surface safety and efficiency systems and tools, tower automation and advanced research, development and evaluation solutions; Maritime Traffic Management (MTM) solutions include Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), port and vessel traffic management information systems (VTMIS), hydrographics, and precision navigation.

Your role

Saab's air traffic management system provide system support for efficiently handling nominal workflows to minimize air traffic controller workload while still allowing maximal flexibility for handling rare and exceptional situations. The workflows are specific from site to site and are managed by a configurable inference rule engine.

Below are two different areas where we see that thesis works could be made. Of course we want a subject that first of all interests the student, and the final thesis description would be written after discussion with the student.

Workflow editor
The task is to create a C++/QML based graphical workflow editor that formalizes the definition of the site specific workflows and the mapping to the underlying rule engine. One of the main challenges is to create a graphical model that air traffic controllers can understand and reason about while at the same time be formal enough to allow automated conversion to a rule engine configuration.

Rule engine language
The rule engine configuration language syntax is based on XML, which has proven to be too verbose in many cases. The task is to analyze the language and either propose and implement an alternative syntax or find an existing language with equivalent properties and show how that language could be integrated into the rule engine. The current language is declarative and implicitly purely functional.

Your skills and experience
