Surveillance provides efficient solutions for safety and security, for surveillance and decision support, and for threat detection and protection. The portfolio covers airborne, ground-based and naval radar, electronic warfare, combat systems and C4I solutions, and traffic management systems.
The thesis work will be performed on the section of environmental analysis. The section of environmental analysis is responsible for environmental engineering analysis within structural analysis, thermal analysis and material analysis. Our mission is to be a support function to ensure safe and reliable products regarding electronics, mechanics and system structures.
The section is involved from early concept design through defining necessary requirements, perform detail design and structural analysis and finally verify the final product.
The CAE software tools we use are the HyperWorks package from Altair (HyperMesh, HyperView, HyperStudy, OptiStruct) and MSC Patran/Nastran/Adams for structural analysis, while for the thermal/CFD analysis we used ICEPAK and Fluent.
The purpose with the thesis work is divided in two main areas where the first is to evaluate theoretical models for design of experiments (DOE) and perform stochastic studies using HyperStudy and Optistruct. The second part of the work is to implement the theories on a container for land based radar systems.
The objective of a DOE study is to understand how changes to the parameters of a model influence its performance. In such a study, effects and interactions of the design variables of the model can be studied. DOE is widely used in research and product development, where a large proportion of the resources go to solving optimization problems. The key to minimize optimization costs is to conduct as few experiments as possible. DOE requires only a small set of experiments and thus helps to reduce costs. Stochastic studies are very helpful for the design engineer and manufactures and is used to investigate effect of input variation (tolerance in manufacture) upon output variability. Performing DOE study in the initial design phase will improve the quality and saving design cost by reducing mass and to avoid re-work.
The container is normally found in all land based radar systems and is attached to some kind of vehicle. A container has several functions where the most important are carrying load, give support and protect/shelter. The container is today built using a frame design covered with sandwich panels. It is proposed to initially use well known light weight technics like glass- and carbon fibre composites, aluminium and high strength steel but it is interesting to also study other innovative methods.
The work will give opportunities to interact and collaborate with people from many areas internally and externally.

We are looking for one or two dedicated applicants interested in CAE analysis, optimization, material, light weight design, strength and durability.
You are probably today studying mechanical engineering, applied physics or equivalent. It is natural for you to work in a team toward a common goal.
