What you will be part of

Business Unit Training & Simulation develops and manufactures training system mainly towards military users. The offer ranges from laser simulators and management systems to virtual simulators and e-learning. The products are based on a combination of electronics, advanced application development, IT technology with databases, optics, analog and digital radio technology and precision engineering. Training & Simulation operates globally with 600 employees spread out on the local sites in Huskvarna, Helsingborg, Stockholm, Sweden, Germany, USA, England, Canada, Norway, Holland, the Czech Republic, Kenya and Finland.

Your role

With recent improvements in augmented reality and increased availability of geospatial data, new solutions for rendering and occluding virtual objects in a mixed reality scenario can be developed in order to enhance the immersion and thus the effectiveness of mixed-reality simulators. Existing solutions today use a local depth map built from an infrared depth sensor to determine occlusion. This works up to 10 meters. Beyond 10 other methods will have to be used. In order to improve the quality of a mixed-reality simulator, real-world geospatial data (height-maps and vector layer) could be used to position and occlude virtual objects relative to an observer. The exam can be divided into three parts: 1. Evaluation of different methods used in order to determine observer position and viewing direction. 2. Evaluation of geospatial data accuracy. 3. Experimentation in order to determine if observer positioning and available geospatial data is sufficient in order to occlude virtual objects from an observer viewing an area with an augmented reality capable device.

Your experiences and skills

This project is primarily aimed at Software Engineering students. The project can be carried out by 1-2 students and will be based at Training & Simulation's head office in Huskvarna.
