Delivery to Thailand has started

14 December 2010

At a ceremony held on November 13 at Saab in Linköping, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) handed over a Saab 340 ERIEYE AEW and a Saab 340 for transport and training to the Royal Thai Air Force.

These were ordered in the first contract that was signed between the Swedish Government, through FMV, and Thailand in 2008. Thailand then ordered a complete air defence system from FMV.

Representatives from the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF), FMV and Saab were present during the ceremony. Air Marshal Songtam Chokkanapitag represented RTAF and in his speech he praised the relationship now evolving between Thailand and Sweden.

FMV’s project manager for the Saab 340 aircraft to Thailand, Gunnar Jonsson handed over the log books to Air Marshal Songtam Chokkanapitag and congratulated RTAF for its new aircraft.

Besides the ERIEYE and Saab 340 aircraft, the order for the air defence system includes six Gripen fighters with accompanying equipment and services, as well as an integrated Command and Control system with data links. The order from Thailand 2008 resulted in FMV placing an order with Saab worth SEK 2 billion.

Additional order from Thailand

On 23 November 2010, a follow up deal was signed between FMV and Thailand for a further six Gripen C fighters, plus accompanying maintenance and support system equipment. The deal also includes another Saab 340 ERIEYE AEW. In this instance, FMV again placed an order with Saab worth SEK 2.2 billion.

The orders that FMV have placed at Saab in relation to both of these business deals concerns mainly the production of Gripen fighters, plus upgrading the Saab 340 ERIEYE AEW.
