Correct and accurate behaviour on the battlefield demands the ability to train with the highest realism. Saab’s PDD provides such ability. Interfacing a variety of weapons systems and accessories, the PDD ensures soldiers use correct drills and procedures. With better realism, soldiers are better prepared, making better decisions in real combat situations.

Features

The PDD is excellent for training basic soldier skills as well as combat techniques at the unit level. Complexity in training can be introduced by adding NC features, hand grenades, medical treatment, etc., and the training environment can be seamlessly changed from classic warfare to urban terrain. The modularity and flexibility in the PDD design allows training at all levels, from individual to brigade levels, and enables future upgrades and the implementation of new requirements.

The scalable training solution
With its modern design and built-in electronics and antennas, the system can be configured according to three standard modules. The predefined versions of the PDD illustrate the different training capabilities available. The Basic version allows soldiers to receive firing and hit feedback. Upgrading the Basic or selecting the Medium version allows soldiers’ movements to be evaluated after an exercise by incorporating GPS position tracking. Further upgrading or selection of the Advanced version (includes full instrumentation) allows real-time monitoring and control of exercises. For features and configurations not listed, please contact Saab Training Systems for more information.

When you hit, you hit!
In all training it is vital to be able to differentiate between a hit and a miss. This is the reason we do not use random functions to interpret a percentage of the hits as a near miss. With our equipment, a hit is a hit. This is due to Saab’s unique high-precision laser beam combined with independent detection lopes in the PDD.

High-fidelity vulnerability
Vulnerability of personal systems depends on the engaging ammunition type, impact point, distance, correct drills, procedures, flak vest, helmet, whether the soldier is in the prone position, etc. The system detects impact from 360° and arm detectors make soldiers vulnerable even if they fire and cover torso detectors. When simulating HE ammunition, the entire group of soldiers within the impact area is vulnerable.

Medical treatment simulation
The system supports a range of different wound types, as well as multiple wounds. Each wound reduces the remaining lifetime depending on the ammunition and wound. Medical treatment simulation makes training even more realistic. Medical personnel must provide correct treatment to keep soldiers in fighting condition and to prevent further injury.

Ready for urban operations (MOUT/FIBUA)
The PDD can be seamlessly used in urban training. No add-on devices are needed on the PDD to utilise indoor tracking and simulation of structural effects from heavy weapons and vehicles firing at the buildings. The GPS (included in Medium/ Advanced) is optimised for outstanding performance in built-up areas.

Cornerstone of the training system
The PDD is the cornerstone of the training system. It puts realism and combat similarity in focus, and integrates the ability to train as you fight using a variety of different weapons and accessories, including machine guns, rifles and pistols, anti-tank weapons, protective masks, hand grenades, sector charges, etc. All handling of training equipment is registered and stored for later retrieval and evaluation. In this way, instructors can always objectively evaluate individual and unit performance. The feedback can be viewed as printouts or as on-screen presentations.

The sound of reality
The integrated audio system provides a realistic emulation of environmental effects and sounds, such as near-misses from small arms, artillery shells, etc. Spoken voice cues inform of the direction of indirect fire, wound levels, BIT tests, etc.
