Social Initiatives in South Africa

Saab plays an important role in South Africa’s socio-economic development and a long-term Corporate Social Investment programme that is in line with national priorities under the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE).

Children on the Move Youth Centre

Most families residing in the Atteridgeville township of Pretoria are poverty-stricken. In addition, many households are headed by orphaned children due to the scourge of HIV/Aids. Children on the Move is a youth center that ensures that children are fed and assisted with their schoolwork on a daily basis. The support is necessary to help improve their performance at school as well. Volunteer care-givers visit the homes of those children that are unable to travel to the center daily and ensure that they are living in a hygienic environment, that they are fed and that they are going to school. The aim is to break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty, create an environment that is conducive to growth and learning for the children as the country’s future leaders.

Saab Grintek Defence purchased new bakery equipment for the NGO to add to its existing machinery and allow it to generate its own income. Machinery purchased include a proofer, bread slicer, dough mixer and a deck oven. This will help the center to provide one meal per child after-school to local school children from needy families, as well as a loaf of bread every day for them to take home and eat for dinner and the following morning. The program can somehow influence the children’s sense of belonging and thus prevent the “street kids” syndrom. The additional resources (machinery and skilled local bakers) will allow the center to sell bread to the local community to generate income, sustain itself and avoid waiting for hand-outs from sponsors and government.

Saab Grintek Defence hosts a “day in the workplace” for high school girls annually. During this day, they are presented to by female engineers and technicians on the type of work that they could do at Saab Grintek Defence. In addition, they are given a facility tour as well as practical activities in the hope that this will spark an interest in training towards a maths and science related career. The day assists the girls by providing them with an ability to make informed career choices, on time, and opportunities to apply for university bursaries in study fields related to our business. Adopt a Technical School

This programme is aimed at assisting technical schools in the Pretoria region with the aim of helping to improve matric pass rates and, in turn, providing a pool of potential resources for Saab Grintek Defence’s future. Bokgoni and Modiri Technical High Schools were identified as under-funded schools that were producing good results regardless of their circumstances. Both were adopted by Saab Grintek Defence in the hope that they could be assisted to improve their results further through generous donations of requirements.

Saab Grintek Defence procured Grade 12 Study Guides for both Technical High Schools for Physical Science, English and Mathematics. Further needs are being assessed in the hope that Saab Gritnek Defence can continue to assist further where possible.
