The participants received tours of Saab’s production facilities in Gothenburg and the Swedish Naval Base in Karlskrona, where they also got to see a Swedish Navy Visby class corvette. The live demo of Sea Giraffe 4A took place in the Swedish archipelago outside Gothenburg as the group visited the historical fortress Oscar II.
Naval Department Chief of Staff, CAPT (N) Fredrik Palmquist from the Royal Swedish Navy, discussed Sweden´s highly challenging operating environment as he shared his views with the group.
“The security situation in the Baltic Sea is challenging with a lot of merchant traffic, naval vessels and aircrafts but the area itself is also challenging due to its geography and topology. In areas like this it is crucial to have access to sensors and weapons that are designed for use in confined waters, says Fredrik Palmquist, Chief of Staff, Naval Department,” Sweden.
The paradox is that sensors and weapons that are designed for confined waters works very well in a blue water environment but the other way around is more difficult. The design itself is important but the correct handling of the equipment is also crucial and in this aspect a user group of great importance. This forum gives many nations a chance to get new input to their development of their equipment but also use international experiences in order to implement this in their best practice for the systems.
Saab representatives gave an overview of currently deployed systems and new versions being developed and the users from several countries presented their case studies and outlined their unique operational environments and requirements.
“The Sea Giraffe users value the opportunity to speak to each other to learn about how best to employ the radar. From Saab’s point of view it is crucial to learn about the users’ experience of the radar to help us support them even more and allow us to design even systems in the future. That’s why we have our engineers and logisticians here to listen and learn,” says Ted Ackerstierna, director marketing and sales, Saab business unit Surface Radar Systems.
