Carbon based nanomaterials mixed with polymer substrate will be studied as a functional material for improved thermal conductivity. The idea is that nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNT), introduced into pre-existent polymers generate new functions of interest for aircraft parts and by that enable multifunctionality. Carbon based nanomaterials could enable electrical and thermal conductivity which in long terms can enable enhanced imbedded thermal management. Several aircraft systems demands active or passive cooling which requires new material with increased thermal properties.
The approach in the proposed project is to introduce carbon based nanomaterials into the surface area of the base material or into a polymer film in order to enhance the conductivity. The project will deal with optimization of the mixture to find the optimal nanomaterial-paint ratio, study of the properties of the polymer and a first study of the orientation effect. The project will be performed on behalf of Saab Aeronautics and the main experimental work will be performed there. Characterization of the resulting material and its properties might be performed using high technology techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Photo Electron Spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal measurements. This might be in collaboration with your home university.
