The thesis work will take place at the business unit developing Saabs command and control systems. The command and control system is the brain at for example a warship, collecting information from multiple sensors, presenting the current situation, identifying and proposes actions to defend against incoming threats.
Your task is to develop a multi agent solution for coordinated defense as the following problem describes.
A number of marine warships shall defend a geographical area, including civil ships. The warships can individually identify and defend incoming threats in its area with missiles. But the missiles are a scared resource and if multiple threats are incoming you want to coordinate the actions to avoid that several warships attacks the same threat, so all threats are defeated with so few missiles as possible. To complicate the situation you shall assume that we have limited communication and bandwidth between the warships due to severe electronic disturbance.
The problem can be solved as a resource allocation problem, but that usually requires efficient and fats communication between the ships. You can also solve it by predefined rules per ship, which is a simple and robust solution but not the most efficient from a resource perspective.
The task for the thesis work is to formulate this problem as a multi agent system, define a protocol (challenge / contract) with limited communication and make a model and simulate the system in Matlab.
We are looking for an engineering student in the last year of education. You are studying for a master in computer science, mathematics or similar. You shall have knowledge in Matlab, numerical methods, statistics and optimization methods. If you also have experience in AI and/or Machine Learning that is beneficial.
