Three of the best hockey teams in Sweden, including the champions Färjestad, used a Saab 2000 aircraft to get to the games in style this season.
The use of a Saab 2000 for journeys by top division teams has had a ripple effect.
The idea was spawned by aviation company Sports Air together with Linköping Hockey Club, Färjestad and last years champions HV71, in order to make the teams' road trips more efficient.
Throughout the hockey season, Sports Air has leased one Saab 2000 aircraft from Golden Air, whose fleet of 13 Saab aircraft includes both the 340 and 2000 models. The business concept was inspired by an increasing demand from clubs, sports organisers and other travel companies for a 30-50 seat vehicle, primarily in Sweden but also throughout the Nordic region.
"This has worked extremely well and all of the hockey teams are very pleased" says Jan Kronström, Sports Air's business manager.
The advantage is that the travel costs and travel times have decreased dramatically since the clubs began flying with the Saab 2000. In addition, the turboprop engines are particularly advantageous from an environmental perspective. The engines reduce both emissions and energy consumption compared to ordinary jet aircraft.
The use of a Saab 2000 for journeys by top division teams has had a ripple effect. Sports Air is currently negotiating possible contracts with other ice hockey clubs, as well as other sports organisers and associations that are interested in travelling on board a Saab 2000 to competitions and sporting events.
