What you will be a part of

Surveillance provides efficient solutions for safety and security, for surveillance and decision support, and for threat detection and protection. The portfolio covers airborne, ground-based and naval radar, electronic warfare, combat systems and C4I solutions, and traffic management systems.

The thesis work will be performed on the section of environmental analysis. The section of environmental analysis is responsible for environmental engineering analysis within structural analysis, thermal analysis and material analysis. Our mission is to be a support function to ensure safe and reliable products regarding electronics, mechanics and system structures. 

The department is involved from early concept design through defining necessary requirements, material analysis, perform detail design and structural analysis and finally verify the final product. The portfolio covers airborn, ground-based and naval radar.

Your role

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are commonly made of sheets of polymer reinforced with strong carbon fibers. The fiber direction of each layer is optimized for the application. However, the layers are hold together by thin layers of polymer with no fiber reinforcement - the interlaminar region - thereby preventing thermal and electrical conductivity, and creating a common locating for damage when the structure is stressed. Cracks can rapidly propagate along these interfaces - weakening and delamination the structure and leading to structural failure. 

The interlaminar region can be reinforced with vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphene flakes, to improve the adhesive and cohesive properties. In some cases, even a surface layer can be added, to improve the in-plane thermal and electrical conductivity. 

The following properties should be evaluated:

  • the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties influenced by either CNT or graphene reinforcement in the interlaminar region
  • the thermal and electrical properties influenced by a carbon layer on the surface
  • the interaction between the carbon reinforcement and the surface layer
  • environmental analysis
  • if some new features or extra values can be achieved, by help of this material 

The work will be both experimental and theoretical.
